In the Energy Act in 2008 it mentions:
Renewable Heat Incentive: to allow the Secretary of State to establish a financial support mechanism for renewable heat, from large industrial sites down to the household level. The aim is to introduce a ‘banded’ system, similar to that for the Renewables Obligation
This suggests that if you use energy at home from a renewable source then you will get a subsidy on your bill. This will be paid for by oil and gas users.
The mechanism for this is being produced at the moment and should be in place by April 2011. For wood pellet heating this could be 3p per KWH, effectively 2/3rds off your bill.
If you are considering changing your heating system before April 2011 this will make a significant difference to your sums. It will make wood pellets much cheaper than Gas to run.
There are some hurdles to get over first. If you are considering a heating system it must be MCS accredited and installed by MCS registered installers. For examples of these please see http://www.energy2burn.co.uk/Grants.htm
The MCS scheme offers further help towards installation of a boiler or stove.
